Project Description

Alton Park is a large Junior School with a 4 form entry. They strive to provide their children with an education that challenges to ensure they fulfil their potential. They encourage self-belief and determination to achieve personal potential within a caring community. They promote respect and tolerance within school and the wider community which prepares their children for life in modern Britain. Their key aims are Achievement, Sharing and Caring.

The Challenge

The school had put up with a poor content managed site from another agency for several years and were also paying for several services that they did not actually use. The client wanted to take back control and manage the content updates themselves and move to a more user-friendly, database-driven, content managed solution. The school also agreed that their existing identity needed revisiting to bring it up to date and more useable with contemporary media platforms.

The Solution

The new site integrates a well promoted MailChimp subscriber list, a news ticker, the latest news posts and upcoming events to the homepage to keep parents well informed of school life. Particular attention was paid to making class pages and surrounding content relevant to the class/year group and hence a focal point for existing parents visiting the site. As well as all school correspondence being centralised to a single location, it is simultaneously distributed to relevant additional positions site-wide.

Calendars, managed by the school office externally in Office 365, are imported as .ics feeds into the site’s events system. By using year group-based taxonomies for the event categories, events can be filtered, separated and placed on the site at relevant positions. Event filtering allows users to view and subscribe only to the event categories  that interest them. All school correspondence is aggregated onto a single page and simultaneously distributed to relevant additional positions site-wide.

As part of the rebranding exercise, we created a suite of illustrations of marine creatures to reflect the school’s coastal location.  By using the school colours, consistent, strong typography and the marine characters, Pylon Design have developed a smart and professional, yet playful site. The school website administrators were trained by Pylon Design and they themselves have now delegated some of the content creation to the teaching staff. This has a positive impact on parental engagement as the school news posted on the website is reposted automatically to the school’s social channels and sent out as a weekly news digest via email.
